The science behind it

Verbalized Sampling is a prompt technique originating from Stanford research that dramatically increases creative diversity in AI responses. The key insight is simple but powerful: by asking the AI to include probability scores with its outputs, we fundamentally change the task from requesting the AI's "best" answers to asking it to sample randomly from its full knowledge distribution.

Traditional AI responses tend to be predictable because of human bias introduced during training. Human raters unknowingly favor familiar, safe answers due to psychological effects like the mere-exposure effect (we prefer familiar things), the availability heuristic (easy-to-think-of ideas seem higher quality), and processing fluency (smooth, predictable content feels better).

By requesting probability scores, the AI shifts from delivering what trainers preferred to performing a sampling task that accesses deeper, more creative knowledge. Research shows this technique delivers 2x creative diversity compared to standard prompting, with larger models showing even greater gains of 1.5-2x while maintaining factual accuracy.
